The Lake

Here are a few interesting facts about Sylvan Lake:

  • Sylvan Lake has a surface area of 42 km2 and a watershed area of 106 km2
  • With an average depth of 10.4 m Sylvan Lake is the deepest lake in central Alberta
  • It has the lowest density of algae: 5 micrograms per litre
  • Sylvan Lake contains 420 million cubic meters of water
  • 60% of water flowing into the lake is rain water; 30% is surface runoff; the rest enters the lake underground
  • 90% of water leaves the lake through evaporation; the remaining 10% is drained through the outlet near Highway 20
