Willy's Special Project Fund

Watershed Willy's Music Fest Special Project Fund

A Sylvan Lake community group hosted a very successful fund raiser on August 13th, 2011 raising $4000.00 for a SLWSS Special Project Fund. This is in addition to $1100 previously donated by caring and generous individuals at Kent Williamson's Memorial.

The fund has been set up in honour of Kent, a long term director and past president of SLWSS, who passed away at a young age this spring.

SLWSS president Kim Schmitt reports that at the August 25th Board meeting two exciting projects where approved from the special fund.

The first project involves the development and distribution of a Video Mini-Series. The plan is to produce four videos that directly support implementation of SLWSS goals. Actual video footage will be longer but will be edited to 3 minute messages for internet consumption. The first video is planned for completion by Dec 31/2011.

Internet distributed video is a powerful tool and the SLWSS plans to use this communication medium to support good lake stewardship. This includes the need for a meaningful plan to ensure Sylvan Lake's clean water is not polluted or infested with Cyano-Bacteria also known as blue green algae.

The second special project to receive a green light is the Watershed Steward Sign Project. SLWSS will be designing and distributing recognition signage for community residents that have completed the 'Living by Water' homesite consultation. The Living by Water project, funded by Nature Alberta, walks near-shore and lakefront residents through a number of beneficial management practices that assist in protecting Sylvan Lake's water quality and natural habitats.
