About the Society

The Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society (SLWSS) was formed under the Alberta Societies Act in late fall, 1999 to act as an advocate for the protection of Sylvan Lake and its watershed. The Society is a non-profit volunteer organization operating under the Alberta Societies Act bylaws.

The Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society (SLWSS) is comprised of Officers and Directors who meet regularly throughout the year. There are currently about 400 members.

Our Mission:

To protect the Sylvan Lake watershed and it's water quality from damage.

Specific Objectives of the Society are to:

What we do:

  1. Advocate for a watershed approach to planning
  2. Respond to lakeside residential developments – Public Hearings, etc.
  3. Monitor the health of the lake and its ecosystems
  4. Promote community-based stewardship and awareness
  5. Lake watch-identify/respond/to lake threats to protect the lake
  6. Support science-based studies of the lake

Where we work:

We are concerned primarily with the Sylvan Lake Watershed which is a sub-watershed of the Red Deer River Watershed in Alberta, Canada.

Our top resource needs are:

  1. Manpower/volunteers
  2. Membership of caring, concerned individuals
