
The Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society (SLWSS) was formed under the Alberta Societies Act in late fall, 1999 to act as an advocate for the protection of Sylvan Lake and its watershed. The Society is a non-profit volunteer organization operating under the Alberta Societies Act bylaws.
The Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society (SLWSS)
is comprised of Officers and Directors who meet regularly throughout the year. There are currently about 400 members.

Our Mission:
To protect the Sylvan Lake watershed and it's water quality from damage.
Specific Objectives of the Society are to:
- promote the sustainability of the Sylvan Lake Watershed and aquatic ecosystem
- increase awareness among all stakeholders to the importance of maintaining a healthy lake and aquatic ecosystem
- support the development of a Sylvan Lake Watershed Protection Plan
- encourage and develop stewardship partnerships
- provide opportunities for the active participation on a community basis in the management of the Sylvan Lake Watershed
- gain support of and encourage shared responsibility by and cooperation of citizens, communities, industries, businesses and government for the sustainability and management of the Sylvan Lake Watershed
- support on-the-ground and regionally based solutions to ensure the protection of the Sylvan Lake Watershed
- identify issues, gather information and develop and implement action plans
- support required science based studies of the lake and its watershed
What we do:
- Advocate for a watershed approach to planning
- Respond to lakeside residential developments – Public Hearings, etc.
- Monitor the health of the lake and its ecosystems
- Promote community-based stewardship and awareness
- Lake watch-identify/respond/to lake threats to protect the lake
- Support science-based studies of the lake
Where we work:
We are concerned primarily with the Sylvan Lake Watershed which is a sub-watershed of the Red Deer River Watershed in Alberta, Canada.

- Membership of caring, concerned individuals
